Outpatient Programs

Balancing a career and family responsibilities can make it feel like there is little room to address addiction struggles, and it can be tempting to continue to wait for a convenient time to get care. But delaying care doesn’t make the underlying problem smaller; more often, it makes the demands of work and family more difficult to manage over time.

Sabal Palms Recovery Center, located in Brooksville, Florida, offers a partial hospitalization program (PHP) and an intensive outpatient program (IOP) for adults age 18 and older who need a less restrictive way of receiving clinical support while still being able to attend to their daily responsibilities.

Partial Hospitalization Programming

Our partial hospitalization program is the longer, more structured of our two outpatient services, providing a full day of programming. It meets Monday-Friday, with four 90-minute group sessions scheduled every day. That schedule allows you to spend the majority of your week focused on recovery, with weekends and evenings free to spend time with your family and take care of regular responsibilities and obligations.

Because sessions are spread across the day, you have time to process what comes up in one group before moving to the next. Many people begin our PHP after completing the residential level of care, when close clinical support is still an important part of ensuring stability. However, you are not required to complete a higher level of care before entering our PHP. You can start your recovery journey directly in this program.

The typical length of stay in our Brooksville PHP is 30 days.

Intensive Outpatient Programming

Our intensive outpatient program offers a lighter schedule for people who can benefit from regular support but are in a place where they can maintain more of their daily routine outside of treatment. The IOP at our Brooksville facility meets Monday, Wednesday, and Friday, with two 90-minute group sessions scheduled on each of those days. Many people move to our IOP after completing our partial hospitalization program or a higher level of care, but that is not required for admission.

The typical length of stay in our IOP is 30 days.

Group Session Structure

The structure of our PHP and IOP includes different group formats. Process groups give you space to talk openly with peers about the situations you’re struggling with, offering a level of accountability and connection that can be hard to find on your own. Didactic and psychoeducational groups provide more structured education on topics related to recovery, and recreational groups build in time for lower-pressure activities that can support your overall well-being alongside the clinical work. Moving between these formats throughout the day can help keep programming from feeling repetitive while still reinforcing the same underlying skills, whether you’re attending sessions in our PHP or IOP.

During group sessions, you will participate in discussions that cover a range of topics that are relevant to sustaining recovery. Examples of the topics that may be discussed include:

  • Relapse prevention
  • Co-occurring disorders
  • Dimensions of wellness
  • Life skills
  • Mindfulness
  • Emotion management
  • Distress tolerance
  • Interpersonal skills
  • Anger management

Individual & Family Therapy

While group therapy is the primary method of care in both our PHP and IOP, they are not the only interventions we use. You will meet with a member of your clinical team for individual therapy sessions at least once a week. These one-on-one sessions take place in a confidential setting and give you the opportunity to process the challenges you’re facing in depth while also giving you a space to identify and work toward your personal goals.

Family therapy sessions are offered weekly if you wish to have your family involved in your care. This can be valuable when you are trying to rebuild trust or communication at home. Involving family members, when appropriate, can also help the people closest to you understand what you’re working on so that they can better support you throughout your care.

Treatment Modalities Used

Clinical team members draw on several treatment modalities to help shape programming. Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) can assist you in identifying and changing thought patterns connected with substance use. Dialectical behavior therapy (DBT) is designed to help people build skills for managing intense emotions without turning to substances. Motivational interviewing encourages you by supporting your personal reasons for wanting to make a change.

We also offer eye movement desensitization and reprocessing (EMDR) for people who have a history of trauma, as the effects of trauma can play a role in addiction and substance use behaviors.

Medical Support & Medication Management

Your physical health is monitored throughout your time in our PHP or IOP. If you’re in the PHP, you can meet with medical staff on a weekly basis. Registered nurses and licensed practical nurses are available in both programs to support your day-to-day medical needs if necessary.

You can also meet with a psychiatric nurse practitioner on a weekly basis for medication management services. Various staff members, including registered nurses and licensed practical nurses, help monitor the effects of your medication so that any adjustments can be made when necessary.

Balancing Programming with Work & Family

Whether you’re in the PHP five days a week or the IOP three days a week, it’s fair to wonder how that schedule will fit alongside a job or the daily needs of your household. Many people find that having a predictable time set aside for care makes it easier to begin and maintain recovery. Employers are often more accommodating with a documented program schedule than many people assume, and your clinical team can speak to that structure if you need documentation for work.

It is also worth remembering that the goal with this program is not to pull you away from your responsibilities. It is to give you the tools you need to keep meeting those responsibilities without substance use working against you. The short-term adjustment of fitting a clinical program into your week is smaller than the long-term cost of continuing to manage everything else while the underlying problem goes unaddressed.

Getting Started

Reaching out to our admissions team is the first step toward entering our PHP or IOP. They will complete a clinical assessment to gain an understanding of your history and current needs, and they will verify your insurance benefits so that you have a clear picture of your options before committing to the program.

From there, our team can confirm which level of care may be right for you, and they can coordinate a start date around your work schedule or family obligations.

If you have questions about what to expect before you arrive, our admissions team can walk you through the process step by step so that you feel fully prepared going in.
